LO1 P1: Preproduction Documents

LO1 P1: Preproduction Documents

In my group, we are creating a detective drama short film called Newspaper. To help us make this short film, we have created preproduction documents, some as a joint effort andto have  some I have created by myself. My roles in the creation of this short film are: Camera operator, editor, director and graphic designer.

I have used some of my knowledge from unit 1 to create the pre-production documents for our short film. We are going to use mise en scène in our Newspaper short film. We will do this by making our short film noir through editing. We are also going to have our detective dressed up in a white shirt and black trousers and Mikhail is wearing black clothes. This is binary opposition; we expect The Detective to be the good guy and Mikhail to be the bad guy. We are also going to use a desk lamp for the lighting to create chiaroschuro lighting and meet the detective film noir genre and conventions. We also learnt about the Equilibrium theory by Tzvetan Todorov which states that all narratives have a beginning of equilibrium, this is then distrupted with a problem that is eventually solved at the end of the narrative.  To follow short film conventions, we are not going to create equilibrium at the end, we want to end our short film on a cliffhanger.

Short Film Pitch

I have created my own Newspaper short film pitch to convey our initial ideas. We are creating a black and white modern detective drama short film. I have also created my own features of a short film report.

                                     Features of Short Films Report

Short films can be around 50 minutes and they hold different conventions compared to full feature Hollywood films. You can find short films online and on some streaming services such as Disney +. For this report, I have researched different short films and I will write about different conventions of short films and how I can use these conventions in my own short film.

Short films have lots of different conventions. First of all the cast is smaller, since short films are usually not created by big conglomerate companies and don't have a large budget they use less actors. This isn't a bad thing however as we can see their character progressions and we feel connected to them. Another convention of short films is they only have one or two locations. These locations set the scene and atmosphere for the short film, this helps the viewers capture the theme or genre of the short film too. Furthermore, short films usually end on a cliffhanger that can shock, sadden, anger or evoke some kind of emotion from the audience. This creates suspense and makes the short film more memorable. Another convention of short films is they have some text or a graphic of the title at the end of the short film to remind the viewers the name and to help them compare their emotions/views of the short film from the beginning. They use different lighting based on the type of genre they are and they take mise en scène into consideration. I have watched several short films to help demonstrate the different conventions in short films. These are The Detective, Finely and About a Girl.

                                        The Detective

The Detective is a detective drama film noir short film. For our short film, we are going to go for a detective drama film noir short film with some comedy. Our short film is going to be called Newspaper but it will be set in modern times, however we are going to draw on conventions of black and white detective films and the genre.

First of all, we see establishing low angle camera shots of the building (location).

The whole short film is in black and white. There is a monologue where the detective is talking about the day and the case. The lighting is dark, we can't really see the detective's face until he turns the light on, we can see the light is coming from the lamp because the short film is lighter on that side of his face. The detective is smoking, using a typewriter (with a slow zoom in, the background is more out of focus with the detective in focus) and you can see a bottle of alcohol on the left. This is mise en scéne, because of the lighting we can see the shadow of the blinds in the background and the detective has a shadow on half of his face.

Throughout this short film, we can hear dramatic jazz music. We hear a knock on the door and the detective gets a gun out of the draw in a close up camera shot. He switches the lamp off, the light from the window lightens up his eyes to give suspense.

The short film cuts to the table with the typewriter and other items that detectives would use in older times and the text: Now introducing a film noir short The "Detective" fades into view. The background is very slowly zooming in and you can see the smoke from the cigarette. The text is in a serif slanted font that would fit with the detective drama style and the time period where serif fonts were used more frequently. The background fades to black and then the text fades out of view.

From this short film, the conventions of short films are clear: They only used one location of the detective's apartment, it ends on a cliffhanger with the detective holding a gun after someone knocked on the door, only one actor is used for the detective character, the short film introduces itself at the end with text graphic. You can also see conventions of a detective drama here that I will mention later in the report; my group is also going to make a black and white detective drama/comedy short film based in modern times so we will consider some of these conventions.

                                               Finely

Finley is a horror comedy short film about an evil murdering ventriloquist doll that was found in the attic.

Finely is a murderous ventriloquist doll that tries but fails to kill Alexandra, Chris and Jennifer, the owners of the house. The main characters find Finely in the attic in a nailed shut box. When Finley comes to life, he tries to stab Jennifer with a knife but she kicked him instead. While Alexandra is in the bath, Finley tries to electricute her by throwing the toaster in the bath but he forgot to plug it in. We find Finley hitting his head against the wall when he fails his attempts. The doll also tries to hit Chris with a bat and misses. To add to the comedy, Finley still keeps failing his attempts three months later when he tries putting rat posion in their food again and suffocate Chris with plastic when he gets in his car. Afterwards he tries to hurt Alexandra with marbles on the floor and nails in the rug, light the house on fire by spraying aerosol (which is higly flamable) at the birthday candles on the cake only to spray an aerosol it in his eyes, shoot an arrow at Chris, he even tried to take the blame for the cat. Chris says "Can't you tell no one wants you here, why don't you just go to the attic and stay there you worthless dummy" to Finely as he throws the crossbow. Finley goes back to the attic and stays in the box.

However, near the end the short film, the college students are in danger, intruders get into the house and they tie up the college students. Finley rescues them by killing the robbers with the same techniques he failed with earlier on. However, the twist is right at the end of the short film is when Finely poisoned the people by putting rat poison in their eggnog at Christmas. Although this isn't spoken, we know this is the case because earlier on in the short film Finely tried to poison their food with rat poison but was caught so he failed.

We can see short film contentions here. There are only five actors altogether in the short film, the three people who live in the house and the two robbers. It is set in different rooms of the house, the short film ends on a cliffhanger when they think the eggnog tastes weird and we infer Finlely poisoned them.

Some horror comedy conventions are: Making scary things funny, using creepy music, building up suspense by making us expect that Finely was at the door when it was just Chris for example, using darker lighting.

                                           About a Girl

About a girl is a comedy drama short film about a seemingly normal teenage girl who has a poor relationship with her parents.

At the start of the short film, the girl sings and dances to Britany Spears, we only see her silhouette. The weather is dark and gloomy and this is a full body shot. The short film then switches when the girl starts to talk to us through the camera about funny things that happened in her life and she takes the mess out of her family with jokes. These are some conventions of the genre. We learn that her parents are split, her dad is looking for work and treats her like a child, she gets forced to watch him play football most Saturdays. We find out more about the girl's life and this gets us invested in the character which is a convention of short films, she want to be in a famous girl group with her friends. She talks about how her mum never lets her have anything because she is a cigarette addict. She talks about running away to her dad. She talks about how good she has gotten hiding things from her mum since then. We see a convention of a short film, a cliffhanger/twist at the end when the girl throws what looked like a normal plastic bag into the river that had her mum's newborn baby with the cord still attatched with it, this makes the audience feel uneasy and shocked. The short film gets quiet when she gets to the river to create suspense.

About a Girl follows short film conventions: We see text of the title in an old text message styled font, It ends on a cliffhanger when she killed her mum's baby, there aren't many actors, not many locations are used and they make us feel connected/invensted in the character by letting us into her life.

Conventions used for the drama comedy genre are: The girl talks to the camera and everytime she talks about something it cuts to what happened in the past, they use lots of jokes, the short film uses relatability for example lots of people love Britany Spears, there isn't much silence to show how she has a loud and talkative personality.

In my short film I will draw on some of these conventions. We chose the name Newspaper for the name of our short film because we are going to create a black and white short film and newspapers are black and white. In our detective drama comedy, we are going to have cutaways with a newspaper that would have riddles, writing or symbols in red marker pen to foreshadow/hint at the events later on in the short film. We can also include red herrings this way. Furthermore, the murder victim is going to be covered in newspapers. The Detective is the best short film for me to draw conventions from because we want to make a similar styled short film.

The Detective film shows the detective drama genre conventions: Black and white, monologue, it uses mise en scène with the objects (we know he is a detective from his personal belongings) and dramatic jazz music. There are also other conventions in this genre that The Detective didn't use like clues, red herrings, a twist at the end.

So in my own short film, I will use the following short film conventions: I won't use many actors (only four of us will be acting), we will only use one or a few locations, we will end our short film on a cliffhanger and use some character progression. We will also follow black and white detective drama conventions such as using Jazz music, monologues, shadows and highlights, red herrings and clues.

                                                           Script

We all created the script together. We have taken the personalities of the characters, the conventions of short films and the plot of the short film under consideration.

SCENE 1: THE INTRO

FADE IN: PANS AROUND THE OFFICE

INT. OFFICEDAY

THE DETECTIVE is reading the latest issue of the newspaper in his office with the letter O written in red marker on it, a small lamp illuminating his paper and desk with folders and files on the table scattered around. Then THE DETECTIVE’s phone starts ringing.

THE DETECTIVE V.O.

It’s Friday 20th April 2022, my office is a mess and my mind is foggy. I was drowning in paperwork and itching for a new case to solve. What case would it be next, a murder, robbery, missing persons? I’m ready for anything.”

CHIEF OF POLICE V.O.

“There has been a good olmurder on the Church grounds, need you to look into it.

Phone call is carrying on, but CHIEF OF POLICE’s voice is heard faintly with THE DETECTIVE’s monologue overlayed on top.

THE DETECTIVE V.O.

“This is not any normal person we are talking about here, this is Nancy Carmine – rich family, father’s a businessman, mother’s an actress and she’s a singer, a good one at that, her voice sounds like an angel… or it did anyway. What was she doing in that part of town? No matter, I can’t ask a dead person a question anyway”

Puts newspaper on table transition. Zoom in on newspaper with S letter written on it in red marker, Cuts to next Scene of Newspaper with C in red marker on it then camera Zoom Out, Pan Up to CHURCH.

TRANSITION FROM NEWSPAPER:

EXT. CHURCH – DAY

LOW ANGLE SHOT looking up to the CHURCH

SCENE 2: THE CRIME SCENE

THE DETECTIVE arrives on the scene of the murder with two ordinary people on the scene overlooking the murder scene. Newspapers are scattered everywhere. A body in the middle of it laying on the cold ground.

THE DETECTIVE

Calmly - “Seems like the work of that serial killer that’s been on the loose” Starts looking for ‘clues’ around the scene.

JAMES

Shocked, stuttering – “A... a. a serial killer?

THE DETECTIVE

Calmly – “Yeah, this is the fifth case this month, but the first that I’ve had the chance to deal with” while still looking for ‘clues’

Camera pans to top-down shot of a bloodied newspaper that’s on the scene of the murder. There is an A written in red marker on it.

THE DETECTIVE gets his phone out to call the CHIEF OF POLICE.

Confidently - “I’ve got some new evidence that might help us solve this case once and for all”

CHIEF OF POLICE

“That’s great, I’ll be in touch”

Hangs up the phone.

MIKHAIL(JAY)

Nervously, stuttering - “So what do we do now?”

THE DETECTIVE

Well first of all, I’ll need to interview you and the other guy individually in my office, second of all, it seems like I don’t know your names”

Pulls out little notepad and pen to write down names.

JAMES

“I’m James”

THE DETECTIVE

“Just James?”

JAMES

“Just James”

THE DETECTIVE

“Alright Just James,” Pause for a moment to write down name in notepad.

“And you? What’s your name?” Slight pen tilt towards Jay

MIKHAIL

In a Russian accent “Oh me? My name Mikhail (Basic Russian Surname) but you can just call me Misha”

Newspaper cutaway again that the detective picks up from the crime scene.

CUT TO INT. OFFICE – DAY

SCENE 3: INTERGATION PART 1

Back at the Detective’s office, we see the detective is sitting at his desk, he has a folder OF SUSPECTS, he is researching them on his computer. He seems lost in thought until there is a knock at the door. This doesn’t startle the detective but gets his attention. Over the shoulder shots and medium camera shots from the side when characters are conversing.

THE DETECTIVE

“Come in”

Mikhail enters the room, looking very confident and cocky. He walks in like he owns the room. The Detective writes down the responses to his questions during the interrogations.

“So, Misha, what were you doing at 12 o’clock this afternoon?”

MIKHAIL

Confidently in a Russian Accent “No comment.”

THE DETECTIVE V.O.

“Damn this guy’s a tough cookie” While looking back over his shoulder.

“Okay, next question, do you know who Nancy Carmine is?”

MIKHAIL

“No, I do not know this Miss Carmine that you speak of”

THE DETECTIVE

“Do you have any idea why there were bloody newspapers scattered around the victim, am I correct in saying that you work at a news agent?”

MIKHAIL

Laughing - “You are a funny guy, Mr Detective, what’s next? You gonna know where I buy my vodka?”

THE DETECTIVE shines light from the lamp in MIKHAIL’s face

THE DETECTIVE

“I’m going to ask you this one more time, where were you at 12 o’clock today?”

MIKHAIL

Laughing - “Your little interrogation tactics won’t work on me, Mr Detective”

THE DETECTIVE

“Alright tough guy, you really think this murder isn’t going to be pinned on you? Isn’t it ironic how the serial killer uses newspapers as their signature?”

THE DETECTIVE SLAMS HAND ON TABLE AND STARTS YELLING AND BEING STERN

            THE DETECTIVE

“Do you not understand the seriousness of this? Now instead of deflecting my questions, answer them, damn it!”

MIKHAIL

“I don’t owe you anything, I don’t want to answer your stupid questions about this girl, she’s dead, nothing you can do to bring her back to life, so leave me the f### alone, man”

MIKHAIL gets up and opens the door angrily until THE DETECTIVE starts talking again, however he looks laid back in his chair reading a newspaper.

THE DETECTIVE

“You better watch your mouth, walk out of that door and you’re going to be my number one suspect and you really don’t want me on your case.

MIKHAIL walks out of the office and slams the door behind him with rage. The detective goes back to updating his suspect files.

SCENE 4: THE INTERROGATION- PART 2

Once again there is a knock at the door, this time lighter and more inconsistent (Shows how nervous James is)

THE DETECTIVE

“Come in James, its open.”

James walks into the room, he looks nervous and sits down as soon as possible. James sees the detective’s name on the table and studies it for a few seconds.

JAMES

“Good afternoon, Detective”

THE DETECTIVE

“Afternoon, Just James, let's get started. Where were you around 12 o’clock today when the murder took place?”

JAMES

Looking down at the floor, tapping his foot on the floor, and occasionally biting his fingernails

“I was at the coffee shop earlier today, you know the one on the corner, and then I started going home, I decided to go through the cemetery but that’s when I noticed somebody, just lying there, on the floor, then I noticed someone towering over, throwing newspapers everywhere”

THE DETECTIVE

Sarcastically - “So let me get this straight, you saw someone tower over her, throwing newspapers? You must be the next Sherlock Holmes”

JAMES

Looks up at detective

Stuttering - “I swear I didn’t murder that woman.. Her... -CONT’D - Whoever she is. I am innocent, I can prove it.”

The Detective shows CCTV Footage of James walking out of bar.

THE DETECTIVE

“I have evidence here that shows you weren’t at the coffee shop at all, you must have a terrible memory. My guess is that you were having a few drinks at the bar and then you started heading towards the church. Isn’t that right?”

JAMES

“What? No, I'm being set up! I’m sure I was in the coffee shop earlier, so I don’t understand why the evidence says otherwise”

THE DETECTIVE

“I’m a detective, I want to help you, but you aren’t cooperating with me, so I don’t believe you are telling the truth Just James”

JAMES

“Maybe I’m not remembering things properly, my mind has been a little mixed up recently.”

THE DETECTIVE

“Are you sure you have no contact or connections with Miss Nancy Carmine?”

JAMES

“I have had some previous contact with Miss Carmine, I see her singing in the pub every Friday”

THE DETECTIVE

“So, you have lied to me. Not something an innocent person would do, is it? Do you have any idea what criminal activity Miss Carmine was involved in? What else are you hiding? If you didn’t remember having any connections with Miss Carmine, how would you remember if you murdered her?”

JAMES

James is stuttering, struggling to get his words out and starts breaking down and feels a little guilt.

“I... I... don’t know”

Scene cuts to black after a few seconds of silence, slow zoom out.

SCENE 5: THE REALISATION

The Detective’s office is dark, the blinds are shut, it is early evening.

MIKHAIL V.O.

“Who does this detective think he is? The next bloody Sherlock Holmes? No, of course not, he’s not even close to his level of detective expertise.”

Pause for a second

“But no matter, let’s see what the detective has been up to then”

Mikhail sneaks into The Detective’s office to snoop around. He opens the door very quietly.

MIKHAIL

“Let’s see what stories you have for me, Mr. Detective”

He looks on the table and reads his case file.

Some detective...”

MIKHAIL looks on the computer, then he looks at the bin. POV shots and close ups of face and the newspaper. He removes a few pages of scrunched up paper and finds a bloody newspaper. The newspaper has the letter R circled in red marker pen. He realises that the detective is the murderer, but he is too late.

“I need to get out no...”

THE DETECTIVE

“I don’t think you’ll be going anywhere Misha”

Camera goes into MIKHAIL’s POV as THE DETECTIVE puts the chloroform over his mouth and nose (should cover half the camera view)

CONT’d - shhh quiet now, you don’t want to wake anyone up now, do you?”

SLOWLY FADE TO BLACK:

Equipment falling over, being dropped, or smashed

Everyone. Dropping a camera could make it smash and hurt us, if the lighting falls over this could hit us and cause damage to our props or the surroundings.

Wear the camera strap around our necks, use tripods, make sure we have enough space, so we don’t hit the lights accidentally and place the light on stable ground.

Tripping over, slipping and falling

The weather is a factor that can make us trip if it has been raining. The wires in the office from the computer or any lighting equipment we will use we can trip over if we are not careful.

We will try not to film our short film when it is raining. Also, we will keep the wires bunched together and out of the way to make sure we don’t trip.

Location Details

We are going to film all the scenes of our Newspaper detective drama short film in these two locations. The office (at Doncaster UTC) will have a desk and computer. We are going to film outside of the church (The Minister Church of Saint George) where there is space for us to film on the grass or inside the church.

Scene/Purpose of filming

In the office scenes, The Detective (Oscar Fletcher) will be called up and given the murder case by the Police Chief. Also in the office, The Detective interrogates Mikhail and James. Furthermore, Mikhail goes snooping in the office and The Detective catches him.

Outside or inside of the church we will film The Detective going to the murder scene, looking for clues, talking to the suspects who found the body and talking to the Chief of Police.

Explanation of camera lenses and equipment to be used

Equipment

Explanation

Cannon EOS 250D (maybe two)

These are the specialist cameras we will use to film our Newspaper short film. We will use the black and white camera option to make the conventional black and white detective drama.

Boom mic and boom stick or/and lapel mics

We can use a boom mic and boom stick to capture audio in the room and anyone speaking. We could also use the lapel mic to record the dialogue of the characters more clearly.

Tripods

We will need to use tripods to get stable camera shots, angles and movements which we need for our short film.

Drone

We could use a drone to take high establishing shots for our scenes.

Lighting

Because we are doing a black and white short film, lighting is a key aspect of short films, and this can change the shadows so we will need to use stand up lighting.

Portrait lens

We could use this lens for Dutch angles, establishing shots, zoom in and out shots. Mostly when James is being gaslighted.

18-55 mm telephoto lens (maybe 2)

This is the main lens we will be using for our short film to film normally.

Ordro 4K camera and light

We could use this camera and the light to take close up camera shots for example, this would be useful as we will need to be wary of lighting because we are creating a black and white short film.

SD cards (maybe two)

We will need to use SD cards

Wireless lights GVM LED

We can use these wireless lights to change the black and white shadows and lighting for our short film.

Problem

Back-up plan

Someone is ill

We will either change the day of shooting or we will shoot scenes they are not acting in.

The weather is bad (raining, windy…)

We can film another day and always remember to check the weather before planning to film.

Not having enough footage

Film more footage than we need to make sure we have enough footage to choose from.

Not being able to film in the church

We could film in a field or ask to film in another church.

Not having all the props we need

We will make sure we have all the props before planning to film.

Here are my storyboards. I have added the camera shots, angles and movements we will use. I have also added monologues, dialogue, voiceovers, timing for each scene, lighting and noise. These storyboards show exactly what would happen in each scene.

                                                 Storyboards

This is my production schedule/GANTT chart. I have created this to help me time the deadlines for each task and the deadline for the Newspaper Short Film to be completed.
